Davina is an awkward teenage girl who views the world through a fantastical lens. She collects dolls in glass jars, traces drawings on top of her bruises, and holds her breath constantly. With her father absent and her mother disabled, she has grown up quickly and escapes often into a beautifully twisted fantasy life that spills over into notebooks and photography darkrooms. Running away from the bleak world of adolescent isolation, Davina looks for salvation in a new relationship with an older boy.

I Believe In Unicorns is a story of escape and adventure, a road trip through the stunning and complex landscape of troubled young love. It is also the story of a sexual awakening; taking us from the shallow end of a swimming pool to the deep end of a bath tub and all of the emotional confusion in between. Davina comes of age through a scarring act of sexual violence, but also through a real and complicated love that leads to a deep empathy with her mother and a discovery of her own true strength and independence.
