DAVINA SPARKS 16, awkwardly beautiful underneath layers of smeared eyeliner, chipped red nail polish and shaggy hair dyed blue-black, Davina is a self-conscious loner, a young woman in search of herself. Embarrassed by her tacky blended family, not terribly popular at school, but super-smart with a real gift for photography, she hooks up with a loose cannon, a good looking but volatile young man to whom she loses her virginity. Alternately obsessive/compulsive, with a penchant for order, but with a desire to escape her tedious day-to-day existence, Davina is a study in contrasts, a restless soul in need of a lot of nurturing.
STERLING 18, a rebellious skater with an androgynous punk rock aesthetic, he is a wannabe musician, a loose cannon, beaten as a youngster by an abusive father. Charming and charismatic, but with a hair-trigger temper and a need to dominate, he finds the perfect girlfriend in Davina who is drawn to his adventurous spirit. Given to bouts of violence and then periods of insincere remorse, Sterling is a disaster waiting to self-destruct.
CASSIDY 15, attractive in a tomboyish way, she is Davina's longtime best friend. Needy, a bit less adventurous than Davina, she feels marginalized when Davina hooks up with Sterling. She accuses Davina of only wanting to hang out when she needs something. Later, she is more than happy to come to the rescue when a desperate Davina calls her from a phone booth. She's just happy to have her best friend back.
BILL SPARKS 45, overweight and overworked, he is Davina's father, engaged to his live-in girlfriend, Nanette. Seemingly oblivious to much around him, Bill is a well-meaning, goofy, often over-the-top personality. Despite his usual bonhomie, Bill sometimes turns acrimonious with Nanette, accusing her of being overbearing. However, he manages to soothe his irritation with another glass of wine.
NANETTE 40, with skin stretched tight across her face, she is Bill's fiancee, the mother of 18-year-old Greg and 8-year-old Amanda. A somewhat over-bearing, meddlesome, prissy, tightly-wound woman, she is working feverishly to make sure her upcoming wedding is perfect. She irritates Davina with her clueless jabbering, even if she is well-meaning.
GREG 18, a sweet kid, usually seen playing a video game, he is Nanette's son.
AMANDA 8, she is Nanette's daughter, a perky little girl, first seen in a princess outfit. She is a spelling bee enthusiast, quick to jump at the chance to spell any word she's given.
MR. STULTZ 35, a hip young photography teacher with crooked teeth, he believes strongly in Davina's talent. He tells her that a talent scout from one of the top art school will be visiting next week and she should make sure to have her portfolio ready. He is understandably confused and concerned when Davina fails to show up for school.
MS. HERNON 30, vibrant and eccentric, she is the sex education teacher. She figures that as long as the kids will be experimenting with sex they better learn to not only have safe sex, they should also learn how to have good sex.
MR. PANDORA 60, looking a bit disoriented in a flannel checkered suit, he is a high school math teacher.
WAITER 30, He is the very accommodating waiter in a tacky Italian restaurant.
WORKER 40, This circus worker yells at Davina and Sterling who have sneaked onto the grounds.
JOSH 16-20, He is one of Sterling's skater friends.
CHRIS 16-20, He is one of Sterling's best friends.
JESSE 16-20, He enjoys makes fun of Davina.
MOLLY 8-12, this girl is singing an off-color ditty while playing jump rope wither her friends.
BYRON 14-18, He is a classmate of Davina's, a somewhat mean-spirited kid.
CLARISSA 14-18, This high school girl is having her hair braided by a classmate.
KARL 16-18 A tough kid who makes fun of Davina and Cassidy.
JORDAN 16-18 A wannabe-bully who picks on weaker kids.
GINA 16-18, This bitchy high school girl makes a crack about what Davina is wearing.
JACOB 14-18, He is a student in Davina's gym class.
JESSICA 14-18, She is a student in Davina’s gym class.
BECKY 16, This popular high school girl tells her friends a particularly vile story about pretending to pass out so a guy would take advantage of her.
HEATHER 14-18, She is a snooty, mean-spirited high school girl.
SIMONE 14-18, This student is a huge gossip.
TERESA 14-18, She is a semi-popular student.
DJ DAN 35, Heard over the PA, he welcomes those on the rink to "Gospel Skate."
REVEREND DAVIS 45, This reverend preaches from the center of the roller rink.
RUTH 50, A roller skater who comes to Davina's aid when she falls.
HAZEL 50, A retiree who likes to rollerskate.
LITTLE GIRL 8-12, This little girl at the skating rink compliments Davina on her dress.
