Leah Meyerhoff is interviewed in this month’s issue of RWUL Magazine
Women in Film Series: Interview with Filmmaker Leah Meyerhoff
Richmond Worldwide Underground Link
July 2008

Rebekah Frimpong interviews filmmaker Leah Meyerhoff about the personal nature of her short film Twitch, her experiences working as a female director, and the inside scoop on her upcoming feature Unicorns:
R: Do you ever feel pressure to exceed expectations as a female
director/filmmaker?
L: The film world, like much of our society, remains a male-dominated industry and in that regard female directors often have to work harder to prove themselves. However, I think the problem is less that female directors aren’t taken seriously and more that producers and film studios tend to work with who they already know - and those directors are primarily male. I think this helps explain why there are plenty of male coming of age stories but realistic female protagonists are few and far between. At the same time, I do think that the world is changing. Even though a female director has yet to win an Oscar, in the Independent world a lot more women are getting out there and making films. I like to consider myself a part of that movement, and hope to inspire younger female filmmakers to let their voices be heard as well.

The retrospective of my short films at the Boston Underground Film Festival last week was a lot of fun. I have never seen everything projected chronologically before so it was interesting to discover patterns and reoccurring themes that I never knew existed. Check out some photos from the event below:

Leah is interviewed by the Film Panel Notetaker about Unicorns, filmmaking, and her upcoming retrospective at the Boston Underground Film Festival.

On Saturday, Brooklyn, NY-based filmmaker Leah Meyerhoff will be heading to Beantown to present a retrospective of her short films at the Brattle Theatre during the Boston Underground Film Festival. I had the great pleasure to hang out with Leah recently during the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas. I first became familiar with Leah’s work at a screening of short films at the Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series last year where I saw the music video she directed, Team Queen. Soon after, I watched her Student Academy-Award nominated short Twitch, which has played in over 200 film festivals around the world and won numerous awards. Last night, I spoke with Leah about her upcoming trip to Boston and what people can expect there, as well as what’s going on with her feature film in development, Unicorns, and other defining moments in her young career.

This was my first time at SXSW and I couldn’t have asked for a better initiation. There were unicorns everywhere! Seriously. With Unico as my guide, we blended right in. We reconnected with lost acquaintances, bonded with new friends, and of course saw a ton of movies. We partied in enchanted forests, dined in trailers full of cupcakes, and danced until dawn. It was a magical southwestern adventure indeed.

Unico falls in love, Texas-style
